Important Information
Class Preparation/Participation & Homework (25%)
Preparation for and participation in class are essential to student learning. First, students are expected to come to class prepared with a writing instrument, highlighter, and their Binder (containing all notes/handouts etc. from previous Health classes). Students will be routinely graded on both class preparation and participation. Failure to come to class prepared or failure to complete activities/assignments during class time will result in the loss of participation credit for that day. “Loss of credit” slips will be issued to students when they lose credit for the day. Mandatory Help Session may be assigned to allow the student to take notes or complete assignments not done during class. Parents will be notified if the behavior continues. Homework will be assigned, but infrequently. In addition to assigned homework, if a student does not utilize class time wisely, she/he will be required to finish it at home.

Students are expected to keep an organized Binder. Notes taken during class lecture, handouts, weekly comprehension checks, and exams should be kept and filed in the binder. Binders will be checked and graded regularly. Students earning a Binder Check grade of 70% or below MAY be assigned a Mandatory Help Session to complete missing work or improve organization.

At the end of the semester, work from the entire semester will be graded in a Final Binder Check.
Students are expected to complete class activities correctly, to the best of their ability, and in a timely manner. Class activities will be graded using a class participation rubric. Students are encouraged to view the rubric regularly to ensure that they are doing work that will earn them the most points. Failure to complete class activities as directed will result in loss of points.
Weekly Comprehension Checks (25%)
Students will be assigned in class reading and in class activities on a regular basis. Weekly comprehension checks are conducted to assess reading comprehension and/or understanding of concepts taught during class. Students that have difficulty understanding the readings or concepts taught in class will be assigned a Mandatory Help Session. Mandatory Help Sessions are NOT punitive but rather are designed to provide extra one-on-one attention to the student. Weekly Comprehension Checks will be given in class. Students absent on that particular day will receive a "0" for the comprehension check until they stay after to complete the assignment. Students have until the next Help Session to make up any late work. Assignments submitted more than one week late will not be accepted. Acceptance of late assignments due to medical reasons will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Unit Exams (25%)
Unit Exams will be administered a the end of each unit and are announced in advance. Exams are given to assess understanding of facts and concepts taught during class. Students who earn a poor grade on an exam have the option to request a make up. Make-up Exam Request forms are available from each teacher. ALL make-up exams MUST be done at the next Help Session. Students that earn a D or an F on an exam are required to attend a Mandatory Help Session to review their exam and discuss skills to improve testing/their grade.
